
The historic Meenakshi Temple Amman is located on the southern
bank of the Vaigai River, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Built somewhere 
between 1623 and 1655, the beautiful architecture of this place is 
known throughout the world. Meenakshi Temple is primarily dedicated
to Parvati, known as Meenakshi, and her wife Shiva. What sets
this temple apart from others is the fact that God and the Goddess
are worshiped together.

According to mythology, Lord Shiva visited Madurai to marry Parvati, 
and it has been the sacred abode of the goddess Parvati since her 
birth. Therefore, the Meenakshi Temple was built here to honor the 
same and to honor the goddess. The most striking feature of the 
temple is its exquisite facade, which has very small details
with magnificent works of art embedded in walls and columns.
The Meenakshi temple complex Amman was built in accordance 
with Shilpa Shastra and has 14 gates or “gopurams”, golden 
“vimanas”, holy shrines and shrines dedicated to the revered 
goddess Meenakshi and many others. This is the main attraction
where thousands of devotees visit the temple daily.
